Sealed Carbon System [SCS]

A new level in drag performance.

Sage is well known for creating the world’s finest fly rods. In 2001 we began work on reels designed to match that level of perfection. These reels would be built around an innovative new drag technology called the “Sealed Carbon System” or SCS.

This extremely lightweight, easy to use and maintenance free drag system came about through decades of worldwide fly fishing experience fused with innovative aerospace engineering and cutting edge materials.

SCS is a fully sealed system using precision-engineered carbon and stainless steel components to create silky smooth resistance while efficiently dissipating heat. It does all this with a minimum of weight, allowing fishermen more line feel and the ability to make more casts without fatigue. Perhaps best of all, this sealed system is impervious to water, sand and grit, requiring no maintenance beyond simple rinsing. Sage SCS is used in three configurations, Cassette, Micro-Cassette and Floating Tripod. These configurations provide the range of drag needed for specific fishing situations ranging from the open ocean to the smallest mountain stream.

SCS is at the core of our innovative family of reels. While its advantages are easy enough to appreciate over the glass case in a fly shop, they become completely game changing while fishing, helping anglers fish longer, cast better, and ultimately bring more fish to hand.

To some a canvas is the perfect medium for masterful creative expression. Others choose a blank page awaiting pictures drawn in words. Or clay or marble or an empty stage. For Mike, a calc pad. There is a satisfaction to working on a measured grid, which is nothing to the joy of setting off across it on some kind of crazy reckless diagonal. The sheer joy of all those little empty squares so precisely aligned and awaiting the stroke of a fine tip mechanical pencil - it’s enough to make the skin crawl. Eight inch. Eight inch. Eight inch. Eight inch. “We used to use cocktail napkins, but the lines were smudgy and there was tearing - and we lost several good ideas to the sniffles. Since switching to calc pads we haven’t had any problems.” It was a dark and stormy morning and shadowy raindrops cast an eerie light on the unblemished page of my calc pad setting loose a mighty hunger to calculate. I like to picture myself standing at the center of the grid staring out at the diminishing lines all around me. The logo a hazy block far off in the distance. The calc pad could be considered one of engineering’s most important creations. The ideas flowed onto my calc pad like frosting onto a birthday cake each more enticing than the last. My thoughts, some I hardly knew myself capable of, lay scratched haphazardly across the network of handsomely spaced vertical and horizontal lines, the beautiful debris of what looks to have been a category 5 brainstorm. I nearly cried on finding I had ripped the final page from a calc pad that had served me so heroically. In a world dominated by uncertainty, the measured perfection of an eighth inch grid can’t help but be a comfort. Underestimate the doodle at your own peril. M.A. Wright Structural Engineers.
